Some South Koreans believe cats are harbingers of evil, disease, and death.

Why do cats have a bad rap? Korean mythology. On New Year’s night, a hideous evil spirit called yagwanggwi would shapeshift into an enormous cat and try on children’s shoes.

If its fetid paws fit into a pair of them, the child would be plagued throughout the year with bad luck or even death. That's why South Koreans hid their shoes (even worthless or worn ones) inside of their homes. Cats also were associated with cholera, a waterborne disease that causes severe watery diarrhea.

Until a decade ago, stray cats were were beaten to death in the streets for crying in the middle of the night. To make matters worse, South Korea has an illegal cat meat trade. More than 100,000 cats are boiled alive and put into soups, stews, or “health tonics” called goyangi soju, which is supposed to cure arthritis and nerve disorders. As a result, most community cats are scared of humans.

Today, 2.58 million South Koreans have adopted cats. And cat cafes have also sprung up across South Korea, especially in Busan, Daegu, and Seoul. In the past 3 years, 578 cat-themed books have also been published — including Haruki Murakami’s “The Secret of an Old Cat” and “Demain les Chats” by Bernard Werber, according to Kyobo Bookstore, the country’s largest bookstore chain. South Korea’s younger generation adores Scottish Folds and Ragdolls, which were featured in the SBS show Jealousy Incarnate and tvN’s Because This is My First Life
